Convert Normal Registration to BH Series

✓ Rule source reviewed: 30 September 2026 · Independent informational tool

An owner whose vehicle is already registered in a regular State/UT series may apply for assignment of a BH Series registration mark after becoming eligible, subject to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, the prescribed form and authority verification.

What changed in the 2022 amendment?

The later BH amendment introduced a route for an eligible owner of a regular-series vehicle to opt for BH Series. It inserted Rule 51B(4) treatment and Form 27A for assignment of a new BH registration mark to an existing vehicle.

Form 27A: what the application covers

The notified Form 27A asks for the existing registration details, chassis/engine or motor details, eligibility declaration and supporting employment documentation. It also addresses hire-purchase, lease or hypothecation status and financier NOC/declaration requirements where applicable.

Practical conversion checklist

  • Confirm that you currently meet a BH eligibility category.
  • Keep the existing Registration Certificate available.
  • Use the current Form 27A where the conversion workflow requires it.
  • Keep the Working Certificate in Form 60 or official identity/service certificate, as applicable.
  • If the vehicle is financed, check the current financier/NOC requirement.
  • Confirm the current tax payable after BH assignment on the government portal.

Where can you apply?

The 2022 amendment gave flexibility for a BH application at a registering authority in the State where the owner has permanent residence or place of work, subject to the official process and verification. Always follow the live portal/authority workflow rather than an old screenshot or third-party form.

Conversion does not erase government verification

Having an eligible employment category does not itself complete the conversion. The registering authority verifies the documents and the tax liability generated under the applicable rule. If the official workflow differs from an older guide, follow the current government process.

Official form: use the latest government-published Form 27A and supporting certificates. Avoid unofficial editable templates unless you have confirmed that they match the current notified form.
