Source hierarchy
Where available, we prefer primary documents, official records, direct statements, original datasets and first-hand reporting. Reputable secondary reporting may be used for context and corroboration.
Claims and context
Numbers, dates, quotations and causal claims should be checked in context. Screenshots, viral posts and clips should not be treated as self-verifying evidence.
Unverified information
If a fact cannot yet be independently verified but is newsworthy to report, the story should say who is making the claim and what remains unconfirmed.
Updates
Developing stories may be updated as stronger evidence emerges. Material errors are handled under our Corrections Policy.
